's attention, but the same total loss of life at sandy hook happens more than twice every day all year long. this is personal for me, not just because the mall shooter was in my district, but i had a high school friend who was killed with a random freak drive-by shooting, my brother took his life with a handgun as a young man. i supported gun provisions at the state and federal level at every opportunity. it might be different now. not just because the horrific image of parade of funerals for children, i submit mayor bloomberg's advocacy for gun safety and mayors who brare the brunt of the gun violence. i welcome the president's leadership and will support any reform that he advances. but i would urge my colleagues to read the columns in the "sunday times" by my fellow oregon ann, nick, and another in "washington post." they demonstrate, we know what works. there are examples around the work. even in america with lax weak gun protections there are in fact some regulations in some places and they make a difference. let's treat gun violence like any public health crisis which i would say losi

's home. police say the 20-year-old shot and killed his mother there while she slept, then went to sandy hook elementary school last friday, where he killed 20 children and six staff members. we've learned funeral arrangements for nancy lanza are being made in her home state of new hampshire. that's according to connecticut's chief medical examiner who would not say if the gunman's body has yet been claimed. also newtown residents have mixed reactions about nancy lanza, her name has been left out of the list of victims of the many vigils held there. gifts are pouring in. the town reportedly brought in four shipping containers to hold all donations. >>> ed lee will introduce new legislation ailed -- aimed at reducing gun violence in the bayview district. mayor lee met with leaders about how to reduce the violence. there have been 57 homicides around san francisco this year compared to 50 at the same time last year. >>> 7:16. there is a new poll showing most americans now support gun control. in the cnn poll conducted monday and tuesday, 52% of those surveyed say they are now in favor of m

.7%. economists were expecting a gain of around 75 to 95,000 jobs with hurricane sandy depressing hiring. now, it's not all good news. the labor department went back and revised september and october lower by combined 49,000 jobs. and the labor participation rate fell in november. that was likely an effect of sandy. 350,000 or so people stopping their search for work. that's what brought the unemployment rate down. not a great report but still a little bit better than what some people were forecasting. the apple a samsung case going on in federal court in san jose. the judge told lawyer for both sides that she may reduce the original award of one billion dollars saying jurors may have miscalculated the damages. but the judge may also enact sales bans against several older samsung devices so that could go either way. samsung trying to get a whole new trial in this case. >>> stock market higher on the better than expected jobs report. the dow is gaining 39 points. nasdaq up by one. s&p up. apple shares rebounded yet by 1 1/2 percent after that big 6% drop the other day. back to you. >>> jason brook
